Locating Gestures within a Cross-Media Relations Model

چکیده

Intelligent multimedia systems require cross-media decision mechanisms for integrating pieces of information expressed by different modalities. However, one still strives to find a cross-media relations model that will be general enough to describe how different verbal and non-verbal modalities interact with one another and that will also have computational applicability. In this paper, we explore whether gesture-language interaction could fit into a computational model that we have suggested for modeling image-language interaction. We argue that gestures not only fit in the model, but their unique characteristics —as manifested through their interaction with language— contribute to the model reinforcing its descriptive power and rendering it closer to a cross-media relations one.

Hand gesture recognition based on dynamic Bayesian network framework

In this paper, we propose a new method for recognizing hand gestures in a continuous video stream using a dynamic Bayesian network or DBN model. The proposed method of DBN-based inference is preceded by steps of skin extraction and modelling, and motion tracking. Then we develop a gesture model for oneor two-hand gestures. They are used to define a cyclic gesture network for modeling continuous...

Knowledge Representation for Generating Locating Gestures in Route Directions

When humans give route directions, they use gestures to indicate the location of landmarks. The form of these gestures reflects that speakers take one of several perspectives when producing them. They may locate the landmark with respect to the speaker, with respect to the person following the route, or with respect to other landmarks. A corpus study shows that which perspective is chosen is pa...

Explaining Facial Imitation: A Theoretical Model.

A long-standing puzzle in developmental psychology is how infants imitate gestures they cannot see themselves perform (facial gestures). Two critical issues are: (a) the metric infants use to detect cross-modal equivalences in human acts and (b) the process by which they correct their imitative errors. We address these issues in a detailed model of the mechanisms underlying facial imitation. Th...

A Computational Model for the Representation and Processing of Shape in Coverbal Iconic Gestures

When humans describe the shape of objects, they often use iconic gestures to depict what they want to convey to a listener. Gesturing gives them the ability to express spatial concepts directly in the spatial medium and thus provides an important communicative resource for spatial language. In order to harvest this resource in language comprehension systems, the composite signal conveyed in two...
